How ADS-B Exchange Technology Works

Traditional flight tracking historically relied on expensive primary and secondary radar systems owned by military or civilian aviation authorities. Today, modern aviation is powered by **ADS-B** (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) transponders. Each aircraft calculates its position using GPS satellites and broadcasts this telemetry twice per second. Thousands of global ground stations equipped with simple antenna receivers capture these signals and feed them to open tracking networks (such as ADS-B Exchange). This distributed network is what allows us to project live flight telemetry directly onto your browser.

Understanding Transponder Squawk Codes

In the flight radar details, you will notice a 4-digit numeric code labeled "Squawk." This code is set by pilots in their cockpit transponder to communicate status to air traffic control (ATC). While most codes are randomly assigned by ATC, three critical codes are universally reserved for emergencies:
• **Squawk 7700:** Declares a general emergency (technical malfunctions, severe weather, or medical emergencies). Aircraft broadcasting 7700 instantly flash red on global radar screens.
• **Squawk 7600:** Signals a complete loss of radio communication.
• **Squawk 7500:** Indicates unlawful interference or high-threat security hijacks.
